Colds and the Importance of Supporting Your Immune System

It starts with a couple of sneezes here and there. Then comes a runny nose, maybe even a fever, and before you know it, you're hit head-on with a cold. If you've been plagued with this illness, you're not alone. The common cold disrupts thousands of people's lives every year. Although colds occur year round, they are particularly common during winter, when people spend more time indoors together, readily passing around germs.

Unlike the flu, colds can be caused by up to 200 different kinds of viruses, making it virtually impossible to form any kind of vaccine for treatment. Therefore, it is especially important to take care of yourself and keep your immune system strong by taking preventative measures, such as stress management, proper diet and exercise, and avoiding germs whenever possible.

One of the leading factors of a weakened immune system is a high stress level. Stress produces the hormone cortisol, which in turn weakens the white blood cells' ability to fight viruses. Thus it is vital to try and get as much rest as possible, so that your body has a chance to physically as well as mentally repair itself.

Poor diet and exercise are also contributors to a weakened immune system. It is vital to build the body's resistance against the viruses that cause colds by including vitamin-rich fruits (especially those with high levels of vitamin C), vegetables and whole grains in your diet. Ask your doctor or pharmacist to recommend vitamin and/or herbal supplements that can build up your natural immunities. Staying active is also important, since moderate exercise has been proven to raise the core body temperature, killing off bacteria that may be lurking in your bloodstream.

Another way to shield the body from harmful cold germs is to avoid exposure to them whenever possible. Try to stay away from anyone who is sick, but if you must be exposed, try to keep your work and/or home area as germ-free as possible with antibacterial products such as cleaners and sprays. Frequent and thorough hand washing is also a must, especially after exposure to germs. Also, avoid touching your face, since placing potentially exposed hands near the eyes and nasal cavities is the most direct way to catch a cold. Using preventative care now can help you avoid those aggravating sniffles and sneezes later, so take care of yourself, and listen to your body.
